Clinical laboratory staff at the Vila Central Hospital have now been trained in the use of the GeneXpert test cartridges which arrived in Vanuatu on 16 May 2020.
The South Pacific Community and the World Health Organisation facilitated the training, which was conducted by the manufacturer of the test cartridges in Sweden via video conferencing.
The GeneXpert method of testing is endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and can produce accurate results within 45 minutes. Vanuatu will now have the capacity to test for COVID-19 in-country and specimens will not need to be sent to overseas for results.
The procurement and delivery of the testing equipment was a collaborative effort between New Zealand, Vanuatu, Australia, the South Pacific Community and the World Health Organisation.
