ANZ Bank has announced it will donate $500,000 AUD to help Covid-19 relief efforts in eight Pacific countries.
Red Cross Vanuatu will receive 7,500,000 Vatu to support their relief efforts for families affected by the global pandemic and cyclone Harold.
ANZ Vanuatu Country Head, Sheng Lee said the double crisis of dealing with cyclone Harold, on top of the global Covid-19 pandemic has meant many Vanuatu people, particularly those on the Northern islands, are experiencing significant hardship and there are families in real need, where one or more caregiver has lost employment.
“This donation to the Red Cross is intended to help Vanuatu families in need support each other, to help them maintain good hygiene practices and social distancing,” said Mr Lee.
“Thank you to the Red Cross Vanuatu team for your guidance on where to best use the funds to ensure that it gets to the people who need it most”.
Red Cross Vanuatu President, Mr Moses Steven Jenery said “It is very encouraging that those who do business in Vanuatu, like ANZ, are stepping forward and giving a hand to the Red Cross. On behalf of Red Cross management and staff and all of our volunteers who are sitting out in the rain and the sun working in the cyclone hit areas, I’d like to say a heartfelt tank yu tumas to ANZ”.
ANZ Regional Executive for the Pacific Tessa Price said combating the spread of Covid-19 was a regional challenge and that ANZ is playing its role to support our customers and communities.
“The Pacific Islands are closely connected and we need to work together to stop the spread of Covid-19 but recovering from the impacts of Cyclone Harold makes social distancing incredibly challenging for many. ANZ hopes this donation goes some way to combating these challenges,” said Ms. Price.
“For our customers in hardship, we encourage you to talk to us about your banking options during this time”.
The donation follows fee removals, interest rate reductions and loan repayment deferral options already offered by ANZ to support Pacific customers experiencing hardship due to Covid-19.
