Preparations are well on schedule for the 52nd Asian Development Bank Board of Governors Meeting to be held in Fiji from May 2-5, 2019.

The permanent secretary for Civil Service Bernadette Welch signed an agreement with Marriott Group of Hotels Fiji to host the high level meeting of 62 countries.

Speaking at the signing of the agreement, Welch said Fiji was ready to host a successful event which will attract over 4, 000 visitors from the Asian region including more 300 media personnel.

“Government will continue to work towards hosting a successful meeting in May next year and the Marriott Hotels has always worked with us over the years for regional and international events,” she said.

Fiji becomes the first Pacific island nation to host such a conference.

ADB assists its members and partners by providing loans, technical assistance, grants, and equity investments to promote social and economic development. The Fijian Government envisages the meeting in Nadi next year would also allow for Pacific Island countries to bring their issues of social and economic development to the fore.

The annual meeting will be attended by Finance Ministers, Central Bank Governors, private sector representatives, development partners, academics, members of civil society groups, media, and the youth from the Asia and Pacific region.

During the announcement in Manila, Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said there were a number of issues that they would like to discuss at the meeting.

He highlighted that the meeting was “about developing our people, caring for our people, developing micro-enterprises and how we can nourish these men and women into thriving businesses and sustain livelihoods for all of them.”

The A-G also noted that it is also about integration and collaboration with the bigger partners, those in the ADB family and of course beyond that too and how they can, through that unity, be able to achieve prosperity for all of us.
