UN Women Pacific announced it joined Vanuatu Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (VASANOC) and Wan Smolbag to celebrate Vanuatu’s first Women in Sports Day.
More than 200 representatives from basketball, netball, rugby, cricket, hockey, volleyball, rowing, table tennis, futsal, athletics and the general public gathered at Wan Smolbag court in Port Vila to showcase the opportunities available to women and girls in sports and to celebrate the contribution they have made, and will continue to make, to sports in Vanuatu.
The event also hopes to inspire and empower the new generation of women and girls in Vanuatu to become sport leaders.
As a vital part of Pacific communities and Pacific life, sport is an important vehicle to drive social change to empower women and girls. It is a key strategy to ‘level the playing field’ in all areas of their lives – from strengthening girls physical and mental health, to creating more gender equal societies.
