Prime Minister Bob Loughman addressed the nation last night on Television Blong Vanuatu as the first plan to repatriate all Vanuatu citizens from other countries ended yesterday.
He said more than 1,500 Vanuatu nationals who were stranded in other countries were successfully repatriated through strict measures following COVID-19 and many of them are already with their families after going through 14 days quarantine.
“The Government acknowledges the efforts of the people in Vanuatu who ensure our country is yet free COVID-19 and our partners who help during this repatriation period,” PM Loughman said.
The New Zealand High Commission announced yesterday that it was the last Ni Vanuatu RSE repatriation flight by RNZDF.
Over the last five days, there have been eight New Zealand Defense Force flights to Port Vila to repatriate stranded RSE workers.
In total more than 1000 ni-Vanuatu have been brought home on these flights and it was the largest repatriation effort carried out by the Royal New Zealand Air Force in recent history.
The success of this exercise has come down to the professionalism and skill of the NZDF and close collaboration between the Governments of Vanuatu and New Zealand and RSE employers.
The second stage of repatriation will start on the first week of August.
