“New Zealand always stands ready to assist our Pacific neighbors respond to natural disasters, and we will work with our regional partners and non-government organizations to help the people of Vanuatu get back on their feet as quickly as possible,” said Winston Peters, New Zealand Foreign Minister.
The New Zealand Foreign Minister made the statement following the devastation Category 5 Cyclone Harold made to the islands of Vanuatu who at the same time preparing for and dealing with the economic impacts of COVID-19.
In response to the disaster, New Zealand assisted Vanuatu through two NZDF aerial surveillance flights, providing images and photos to assist NDMO with its emergency planning and an NZDF flight to deliver essential supplies such as water containers, chainsaws, agriculture kits, satellite phones and a private helicopter to help with relief efforts.
The supplies and flights are in addition to VT 179,828,500 million (NZD 2.5 million) total support which includes approximately VT72 million (NZD1 million) to support Vanuatu Government and approximately VT 50,352 million (NZD 700,000) for NGO response.
New Zealand is focused on getting timely and effective humanitarian support to those who need it most, while also preventing the spread of COVID-19.
