Monday 20 April is set as the date of the first sitting of Parliament under the 12th Legislature as the Secretariat of Parliament announced yesterday that the summons for that sitting would be sent to the 52 winning candidates today.
Under the National Constitution, the notice of the opening of a new Legislature must be sent to the elected candidates 10 days before the date of the new sitting of Parliament.
The sitting will follow the general elections that took place on 19 March and it will be for the winning candidates to take their oath of allegiance before the National Parliament will proceed with the election of the new Speaker of Parliament and his deputies. There will be also the election of the new Prime Minister.
Negotiations are underway and will lead to the formation of a new coalition government that will be strutured following the election of a new Prime Minister.
The old partners in the latest Salwai led Government have again reached a majority and will need the support of other parties to have a stable majority.
