The Port Vila municipal council meeting summoned by the mayor Albert Daniel Sandy on Friday following the instructions received from the minister of Internal Affairs Andrew Napuat saw the majority of councilors taking control in decision making.
All VP councilors, including the mayor with Tony Iauko, the sole UMP councilor and Joel Langlois from PDP, who 24 hours before switched his affiliation to the mayor’s bloc, were voted out as committee members by the bloc led by the former deputy mayor Eric Festa.
Tony Iauko was voted out of his position as Chair of the Finance Committee.
The results of the elections of the new working committees are as follow:
FINANCE COMMITTEE
Cr Leipanga Manses (LPV) – Chair
Cr Jenny Tasale (GJP) – Vice Chair
Cr Albert Sandy Daniel (VP) – Ex-Officio Member
Cr Ulrich Sumto (RMC) – Member
Cr Erick Festa (VGC) – Member

PLANNING COMMITTEE
Cr Willie Saatearoto (VGC) – Chair
Cr Moses Stevens (GJP) – Vice Chair
Cr Albert Sandy Daniel (VP) – Ex-Officio Member
Cr Rose Peter (VGC) – Member
Cr Vai Maki (RMC) – Member

DEPUTY MAYORS
Cr Sebora Tapau (LPV) – First Deputy Mayor
Cr Ross Peter (VGC) – Second Deputy
Cr Vai Maki (RMC) – Third Deputy

The law does not allow a Lord Mayor to be voted out of office (the law does not allow votes of no confidence), which is why the Lord Mayor was not able to be voted out.

But Cr Albert Sandy Daniel’s term as Mayor finishes in March 2020, when a new Mayor will be voted into office for the remaining 2 years of the 4-year term.
