Lautoka have won the Fiji league for the first time since 2009. A dramatic winner in the 85th minute against Suva secured a 2-1 victory for the new Fijian champions, OceaniaFC reports.
Substitute Jone Vesikula scored a header five minutes after coming on to win the match – and title – for Lautoka. The match had been poised at 1-1 after Lautoka top scorer Siotame Kubu scored just before half time.
Suva equalised in the 55th minute from a Kelvin Naidu penalty but the match was won late on.
Lautoka coach Kamal Swamy said: “The boys didn’t lose hope and kept on working hard and this resulted in our winning goal.
“We made our set piece count with the second goal and it has given us the League crown.”
Lautoka, who have been by far the best team in Fiji’s top division this year, have won their fourth title and the first in eight years.
The club also secured Oceania Champions League qualification and will represent Fiji in the continental tournament.
